Best used cars under $15,000, and what they really cost per month

By Mihir · Updated November 2026 · Numbers from the CarBudgetFit calculator

The sticker price is only part of it. Here is what a $15,000 used car costs each month once you add insurance, gas and upkeep, and which popular models you can find at that price.

All-in per month$589
Loan payment$263
Insurance, gas, upkeep$327
Income to afford it~$43,000

A $15,000 used car costs about $589 a month to own

That is a $263 loan payment plus about $327 for insurance, gas and upkeep, for a compact car with around 60,000 miles. Upkeep is set 30% higher than for a 3-year-old car, the same adjustment the calculator makes for higher mileage. To keep that under 20% of take-home pay you need roughly $43,000 a year in salary.

Which models to look for at $15,000

No best-selling model is selling for under $15,000 at three years old right now. At this price you are shopping 5- to 7-year-old cars, usually with 60,000 to 90,000 miles. The best bet is an older version of a car that is affordable even when newer. These best-sellers have the lowest prices at three years old, so older ones are the most likely to land under $15,000:

ModelType3-year-old price today
Chevrolet TraxSmall crossover$19,500
Hyundai ElantraCompact car$20,000
Nissan SentraCompact car$20,100
Kia K4Compact car$19,500
Nissan KicksSmall crossover$20,200

Toyota, Honda and Subaru models hold their value best, so a $15,000 one will usually be older or have more miles than a Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet or Nissan at the same price. That is a trade-off, not a reason to skip either.

The same $15,000, by type of car

The loan payment on a $15,000 car is the same $263 whatever kind it is. What changes is the cost to run it. At $15,000, an entry luxury SUV costs about $241 a month more than a hybrid car, mostly from insurance and fuel.

Assumes good credit (9.5% APR used, 6.9% new), a 5-year loan, $4,000 down, 6% sales tax plus $600 in fees, 12,000 miles a year, gas at $3.10 and full-coverage insurance at typical rates. Your numbers will differ; the calculator lets you change every one of these. Upkeep is raised 30% for a higher-mileage car.

Before you buy a used car at this price

  • Get a pre-purchase inspection. An independent mechanic will check it for about $100 to $200, which is cheap compared with one surprise repair.
  • Check for open recalls. Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Recall repairs are free at any dealer for that brand.
  • Get pre-approved for the loan first. A credit union rate is often lower than the dealer's, and it stops the conversation from turning into "what monthly payment do you want?"
  • Get an insurance quote on the exact car. It can swing by $50 a month or more between two similar cars.

Common questions

Is $15,000 a good budget for a used car?

It is about what a typical used car sells for in late 2026 when you go a few years older. With $4,000 down and good credit, a $15,000 car costs about $589 a month all in. Whether that is a good budget depends on your take-home pay: keeping it under 20% means bringing home at least $2,946 a month.

How much is the monthly payment on a $15,000 used car?

With $4,000 down, 6% sales tax and fees, and a 5-year loan at 9.5% APR, the loan payment is about $263 a month. At a 4-year loan it is about $314, and at 6 years about $228.

What else should I budget for besides the payment?

Insurance, gas and upkeep add roughly $327 a month for a compact car and more for SUVs and trucks. Also keep money aside for tires, brakes and registration, which come up every year or two.
